How big of a drywall hole is a DIY fix versus something to call someone for?

A small hole (a doorknob dent, a nail hole) is genuinely minor. A larger hole means cutting in a new piece of drywall and blending the texture and paint so it doesn't show — a different level of skill entirely, and an easy thing to make look worse by trying to rush it.
Is this a DIY job or worth calling someone?
Small holes are a reasonable weekend project with a patch kit from any hardware store. Anything bigger than about the size of your hand, or a hole where you need the wall to look genuinely seamless afterward, is where it's worth having someone experienced do it once, right.
