How urgent is it to deal with ice on a driveway or walkway?

What’s likely going on

Ice on a walking surface is one of the most common causes of serious falls at home, and the risk is real for anyone, not just older adults — but a fall is more likely to cause a serious injury the older someone is. A slippery, icy patch of black ice in particular is often invisible until someone's already stepping on it.

What we’d suggest

This is worth treating as more urgent than it feels while you're inside looking at it — salt or an ice-melt product on the areas people actually walk (not the whole driveway) handles most situations safely and immediately. For a larger area, or if it happens often enough to be a recurring worry, having someone handle it regularly through the season is a reasonable thing to stop doing yourself.

Not sure, or ready to have someone take care of it?
