My carbon monoxide alarm is going off — what should I do?
What’s likely going on
A continuous carbon monoxide alarm siren means the detector is reading dangerous levels of an odorless, invisible gas, usually from a furnace, water heater, generator, or another fuel-burning appliance not venting properly. Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion, and it can be fatal — this is never something to wait out or investigate room by room.
What we’d suggest
Get everyone (and pets) outside into fresh air immediately — don't stop to find the source or open every window first. Once you're safely outside, call 911 or your local fire department from out there. If anyone is feeling dizzy, confused, or has a headache, mention that to the dispatcher and get medical attention. Don't go back inside until emergency responders say it's safe. Once it's confirmed safe, we're glad to help get the appliance and detector properly serviced.
