Why is my air conditioner running but not actually cooling the house?

What’s likely going on

A dirty air filter restricting airflow is the single most common cause and the easiest to rule out. Beyond that, a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor, or ice buildup on the unit itself (often caused by the same restricted airflow) are all real possibilities that need a trained eye to tell apart.

Is this a DIY job or worth calling someone?

Checking and replacing the air filter is something everyone can safely do themselves, and it solves this more often than you'd expect. If the filter is clean and it's still not cooling, especially with any ice visible on the unit, that's a real diagnostic job, not a guessing game.

Not sure, or ready to have someone take care of it?
