I smell gas in my house — what should I do?
What’s likely going on
Natural gas itself has no smell — utilities add that distinctive rotten-egg or sulfur odor deliberately so a leak is noticeable. If you're smelling it anywhere in or around your home, gas may be leaking from a line, a stove or other appliance connection, or your water heater. This is never something to track down room by room yourself.
What we’d suggest
Leave the house right away and take everyone with you — don't stop to open windows, flip a light switch, or turn anything on or off, since even a small spark can ignite leaking gas in the air. Once you're outside and clear of the house, call your gas utility's emergency line or 911. Don't go back in until they tell you it's safe.
